The crucible
Dawn on the urban labyrinth
A maze of blind alleyways
Another chance to run the gauntlet
Try and survive one more day
A child peers through the jagged pane
The world lies in wait below
Abandoned lots and street corners
The one way of life he’ll know
Schoolyard have become battlegrounds
Stick, stones and broken bones
These are now the rights of passage
Violence the language known
Peering from behind barred windows
Like so many prison cells
Last remains of the human zoo
Could this dying species tell?
Bright lights shine for but a few
Teasing just to make us buy
Another neon sign com eon
Twisting words make up the lie
Sirens wailing throughout the night
Driving us to distraction
This state of law and disorder
Our brave new world in action
We can destroy all forms of life
With the city’s shell intact
This crucible will outlive us
Boiling point – We can’t react!
